Of course, in the tradition of installfests, the number one activity on that day will probably be linux installations; as we are sure you know, we will be ready to receive people who arrive with their computers to set linux up on with them. For people who are simply curious about linux and who want to know more, we will be demonstrating the operating system and the applications available on it. This covers a fairly large range of things. At the most basic level, we can show you what linux looks like, how it works, and describe how it differs from what you are used to, and why we feel this is better. On a more specific level, there will be volunteers ready to show you how many different and specific tasks can be accomplished under linux, such as programming with visual tools (a la Visual Studio), graphics work, networking (LANs and some fancy tricks), and all the way up to getting a solid web server up and running in 15 minutes flat. We will be there to introduce you to the fascinating world of linux, so it is your questions and interests that matter. Thank you for your interest, and hope to see you there. Date: Saturday the 1st of May (this is next saturday) from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM Place: Al Sawi Cultural Center 26th of July street under 15th of May bridge Zamalek al Sakia is close to the Zamalek Central and Coffee Roastry it is very well known so if you just get to al zamalek and ask people will tell you. I hope this clears any confusion. -------- we sent an email explaining who Linux Egypt is, but many are asking about the people who organized this festival. this festival was organized by a group of Volunteers who even financed the event from their own money, you can see the list of volunteers and a photo of them @ http://linux-egypt.manalaa.net/index.php/MayInstallFest/Volunteers the festival itself was organized in an open manner very much similar to the way GNU/Linux is developed. We did all the preparation through a Wiki, a Wiki is a webpage that anyone can edit, modify and add too, without any restriction, the volunteers and Linux Egypt members used this wiki to self organize themselves. You can see how the process work by looking @ http://linux-egypt.manalaa.net/index.php/MayInstallFest --------- if you have any other questions please send them to me @ alaa@linux-egypt.org hope to meet you all next saturday, Alaa -- http://www.manalaa.net ultimate_answer_t deep_thought(void) { sleep(years2secs(7500000)); charset=US-ASCII Content-Disposition: inline Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Hi all, sorry for not keeping in touch with you, the past few days where very hectic, next time we should give ourselves more time to prepare :-) I got many questions about how many blank CDs to get and what software we will distribute. easiest thing is to bring many CDs even if you don't end up using them all you can give your spare ones to visitors who forgot to bring their own. you see how many CDs you'll need depends on what flavor of GNU/Linux you'll take so its anything between 1 to 10 CDs, my advice is to bring 10 anyway. what kind of software we will distribute? we will be making copies of GNU/Linux distributions, these are CDs that contain the full GNU/Linux operating system plus thousands of applications covering anything from simple desktop usage to full fledged servers. you can choose from LiveCD systems a livecd operating system is an system you don't need to install, you run a whole system with desktops, compiler,s servers and all by just booting from the CD. LiveCD distros are the perfect way to test GNU/Linux if you're not sure you want to run it or not, it takes no time, and does not touch your harddisk at all. liveCD distros are 1 CD only MandrakeMove a very easy liveCD with full multimedia support, perfect for new users. Arabbix 0.8 a liveCD distro made by Arabeyes.org based mainly on morphix, this one offers a complete Arabic desktop that shows off the achievements or the Arabeyes.org project in bringing arabic support to GNU/Linux Knoppix the first successful liveCD distro and still the most popular, this one has thousands of applications. Morphix a liveCD distro made to be easy to modify, it was originaly based on knoppix but offers more options Morphix Gaming liveCD focussed on games, has lots of free software games and some demos for Linux commercial games Morphix Light a version of morphix specialy made for old computers, uses a lightweight desktop that doesn't need much RAM or CPU speed SystemRescueCD a live CD made specialy to diagnose and fix computers that can't safely boot their original system for general users Mandrake 10 official edition 4 CDs this is perfect for those new to GNU/Linux, it is known to be the easiest Distro around, and yet it is still a very powerful and secure operating system. RedHat Linux 9 3 CDs while this is a bit old, it is still very popular, RedHat is the biggest and most successful GNU/Linux company. Fedora Core 1 3 CDs when Redhat stopped making the free for download RedHat Linux they started the Fedora project to continue development, so you can think of this as a new RedHat release Debian 3.0r2 7 CDs debian is known to be the most secure and stable distro, while it is big and covers more software than other distros it tends to have older versions and sometimes less features (all for the sake of security of course). for users who prefer to do things on their own, and want to customize all aspect of their system we bring you Slackware 9.1 4 CDs known to be a sleek distro with no extra bloat or anything to slow your computer. Gentoo 2004.1 2 CDs in gentoo you have to compile everything from source code, so not only do you get to customize the system to the smallest detail but you also get to use your hardware to the maximum performance it can offer and finally we got some special CDs Mandrake 10 Linux Egypt edition 2 CDs this 2 CD only edition is made specially for the festival it has some special packages for multimedia, filesharing and better arabic support. Mandrake 10 ultimate edition 10 CDs a custom built Mandrake edition with all the extra software that could be found, this set has more games, multimedia, filesharing, scientific software than any other distro Fedora 2 test 3 CD 4 the latest beta of the new Fedora due to be released soon and finally Phaeronix a liveCD made from scratch by one of our members. we will also have FreeBSD 5.2.1 2 CDs FreeBSD is not a GNU/Linux system at all, but it is another free/open source operating system, based on the original Unix code, it is very powerful and very popular among universities. so I know this seems like a hard decision to make, don't worry we'll be there to help you, and you can even try all these yourself before deciding (or you could just take a copy of it all :-) see you all tomorrow, Alaa -- http://www.manalaa.net ultimate_answer_t deep_thought(void) { sleep(years2secs(7500000));
